Integrated energy systems

Rethinking
the battery as
a system.

E48 explores the integration of cell architecture, structural systems, thermal management and mechanical control to inform new approaches to battery design.

The approach

Look beyond the cell.

Battery performance and safety are influenced by more than electrochemistry alone. Packaging, interfaces, heat transfer, mechanical loads and failure pathways all matter. E48 investigates how these elements might be considered together from the outset.

01 / STRUCTURE

Integrated Systems Spar

Exploring structural integration, cell support, sensing and the management of dimensional change within a coordinated assembly.

02 / THERMAL

Thermal management

Investigating heat transfer, coolant pathways and the challenges of limiting thermal propagation between cells.

03 / CONTROL

Mechanical boundary management

Examining how cell expansion, contraction and changing mechanical conditions could be measured and managed within defined limits.

Design philosophy

Integration before complication.

The objective is to understand how individual design decisions interact, identify where integration may provide value, and test those assumptions systematically.

Understand the interfaces Examine the mechanical, thermal and electrical relationships between components.
Make the system observable Explore sensing approaches that reveal relevant changes in operating conditions.
Validate the engineering Use modelling, experiments and measured evidence to evaluate proposed design benefits.
E48 / Engineering development

Ideas are a starting point.
Evidence moves them forward.

E48 is developing an integrated perspective on battery architecture and supporting systems. Its concepts remain subject to engineering assessment and validation.
